Qkine bovine/porcine fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) 154 aa protein is more biologically active than a comparable alternative supplier protein
Recombinant bovine/porcine FGF2 protein 154 aa (bFGF/basic FGF) is the long form of FGF-2 used for the development of optimized serum-free culture media for species-specific bovine (cow) and porcine (pig) cultivated meat and veterinary research applications.
Qkine bovine/porcine FGF-2 (Qk056) is animal origin-free, carrier protein-free and tag-free to ensure high and consistent bioactivity.
Qkine bovine/porcine FGF-2 bioactivity
- FGF-2 (Qk056) was bioactive in a quantitative luciferase assay with an EC50 of 278.8 pg/ml (17.4 pM).
- This was more bioactive than bovine FGF-2 from an alternative supplier, which had an EC50 of 1562 pg/ml (97.6 pM).

Qkine bovine/porcine FGF-2 was found to be more bioactive than that from an alternative major supplier. Bioactivity was determined using the Promega serum response element luciferase reporter assay in transfected HEK293T cells. Cells were treated in triplicate with a serial dilution of Qkine FGF-2 (Qk056, green) or Peprotech FGF-2 (AF-450-62-10UG, Supplier B, black) for 3 hours. Protein concentrations were measured before use (Peprotech vial recovery 87%, Qkine 110%). Firefly luciferase activity was measured and normalized to control Renilla luciferase activity. Data from Qk056 lot #104386.
This bioactivity comparison demonstrates that Qkine bovine/porcine FGF2 was more bioactive than bovine FGF2 from an alternative major supplier. Qkine recombinant proteins are more cost effective and have the advantage of having high and consistent vial recovery. They are highly pure and animal origin-free, giving lot-to-lot consistency in bioactivity for long-term reproducible culture of bovine/porcine stem cells. Qkine bovine/porcine FGF2 154 aa (Qk056) can be used in comparative media optimization studies with Qkine bovine/porcine FGF-2 145 aa (Qk040).
