Job Description

Qkine is a Cambridge-based biotechnology company specialising in the development and manufacture of high-quality, recombinant, animal-free growth factors and cytokines for research, bioprocessing, and advanced cell therapy applications. By combining proprietary production and protein-engineering technologies, we address fundamental biological and scale-up challenges across the stem cell, organoid, regenerative medicine, and cultured meat sectors. Our approach has enabled us to build a loyal customer base that includes leading biotechnology companies and world-class academic institutions.

We are seeking a Senior R&D Technician to support the work of our R&D team. We also welcome applications from candidates with less hands on laboratory experience who meet the essential competencies and qualifications and demonstrate strong motivation and the ability to learn quickly. Such candidates may be considered for appointment at the Technician level.

The role will involve a range of laboratory support activities, including the preparation of buffers, media and gels; maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment; receiving deliveries and monitoring consumable stock levels; and managing laboratory waste. Previous experience working with proteins would be advantageous but is not essential, as full training will be provided in protein expression and purification.

The successful candidate will hold a BSc in Biochemistry or a related scientific discipline or have relevant experience within the biotechnology industry. They will demonstrate excellent attention to detail, strong communication and organisational skills, and a flexible, adaptable approach to their work. We are looking for a proactive team player who is willing to take on new challenges, has a broad range of practical skills and brings a positive, can-do attitude. This is a hands-on role and requires on-site presence during the working week.

Required Experience

Essential Expectations

  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment and following laboratory SOPs and established procedures.
  • Direct experience in the preparation of buffers and stock solutions and running SDS-PAGE gels.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of using an ELN platform, with a strong focus on accurate data collection, recording and presentation.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate and well-organised laboratory records.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise work effectively.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable Expectations

  • Experience in aseptic techniques and routine laboratory equipment maintenance would be an advantage.
  • Experience working within a QMS such as ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 13485 would be an advantage.
  • Experience working with proteins, including protein expression, purification or analysis, would be advantageous.
  • Experience working in a biotechnology, pharmaceutical or other regulated laboratory environment would be beneficial.

We believe in nurturing our team, empowering individuals, and working flexibly. We do this while exceeding the expectations of our customers and collaborators by focussing on delivering the best service, scientific insight, and product quality.

In addition to competitive salaries, we also offer a free private medical scheme to all our employees and an attractive employee share option scheme.
